“You mean that for five months I can’t meet the man of my dreams and fall madly in love.” Even as she spoke the words she knew they were false. She had met the man of her dreams. Perhaps he was buried under layers of bitterness but underneath he was honest, loved his family, and was willing to give of himself to protect them. “Come on, Gemma. There was never going to be a Prince Charming for me.” She grimaced. “I just don’t attract men.”

“Oh, you attract them, but then you scare them off by your impenetrable walls.”

“You’re probably right.” Her voice dropped. “What about you? You mentioned a man who worked with the refugees. I remember now. His name was Turan. He came to one of Romy’s soccer games.” Dare she say more? “I think you liked him.”

“That was in the summer.” She felt the sense of terror again as she remembered Romy falling to the ground after a bigger boy ran into him. She had knelt beside the taciturn Turan as he worked over the motionless Romy who had the wind knocked out of him. She remembered the flooding feeling of gratitude and something more when he helped Romy to his feet and then walked beside them as they left the playground. “I haven’t seen him since then.” She struggled to keep the hurt from her voice. “Men! I just never learn. So tell me what you want me to do.”

“I’m hoping you’ll stand up with me at my wedding. I want Romy to come too. Tomorrow at 11 a.m.” Her voice wobbled slightly. “We will be married by a minister from the Presbyterian Church at home, at Damon’s home, so his grandmother can be there for the ceremony.”

“Of course I’ll be there.” Gemma hugged Laury. “Is there anything I can do to help?”

“There is something.”

“Out with it!”
